Skoki: Beyond the Passes
A History of Western Canada's First Backcountry Ski Lodge
by Kathryn Manry
Beyond the hectic ski area of Lake Louise and over two passes lies Skoki Lodge, the first backcountry ski lodge built in western Canada. This book tells the story of Skoki, introducing us to the colourful characters who built, managed and visited the lodge since the 1930s. Meet an English aristocrat with ambitious dreams, a German baroness seeking the simple life, earthy cowboys and ski enthusiasts. Today, Skoki still offers enticing ski slopes, tranquil beauty and simple living to its guests.
Kathryn Manry's mother ran Skoki Lodge in the 1940s. Kathryn remembers listening to the tales of Skoki's early days, and decided to ferret out the stories and photos associated with Skoki's history before these important details were lost.
