  • Permission forms for all artwork, tables, graphs, photographs etc.
  • Companion disk (and printout of disk directory), if one will be packaged with your book
  • Updated author questionnaire
  • Style sheet for use in copy-editing and proofreading, with proper spellings of technical words and terms, unusual-looking acronyms, uncommon units of measure etc.
  • Some of these elements might not be essential to your book. Check with the publisher if you are uncertain.

Manuscript Dos and Don'ts
Do
  • submit your manuscript package on time and complete. Late or incomplete manuscripts may result in publication delays or cancellation of your project.
  • consult the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • consult the Canadian Oxford Dictionary for spelling and usage issues.
  • download our current style guide and follow it.
  • submit digital images wherever possible. Scanning hardcopy images takes us a lot of time.
  • place all your images in one folder on the CD or DVD that contains your manuscript package.
  • give each image a unique file name.
  • use the specific image filename when inserting "callouts" in your Word document to tell us where to place images in the text. Please bracket the instruction in chevrons and put it on a separate line, like so:
    <insert greengrass.tiff somewhere in this chapter>
  • save and submit your images in .tiff format. If you are unsure about how to do this, submit your images in the original file format.
  • submit maps as .eps or .ai files. Contact us if you would like to use some other format.
  • submit your images at 300 dpi at the dimensions you want them to print. If you are unsure about how to do this, or what this means, simply submit your images at the largest dimensions and highest resolution you have available.
  • check out our publishing FAQs section if you have questions.

Do not

  • embed images in your Microsoft Word document. These will be stripped out and deleted, as they are not suitable for print.
  • resave jpegs multiple times. It is best to send us the original files.
  • expect images pulled from the web to print well. These images are typically low resolution and will print at roughly one-third the size you see on your monitor.
  • "res-up" your images in Photoshop or any other software.
  • colour-correct your images unless you know how to do this.
